KANSAS CITY, Mo. - (Box Score) Tennessee Wesleyan came out slow and battled back from an early deficit, but in the end Davenport ( Mich. ) was able to regain the lead and take away an 85-72 first-round victory on Thursday at the 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
Davenport's win pushes its season record to 31-2 and secures an 8:45 p.m. Friday night date with the winner of Thursday's final game between Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) and College of Idaho. Tennessee Wesleyan's season closes out at 17-16. It was the Bulldogs eighth overall appearance and first since 2004.

The Panthers raced out to an 11-point lead within the first four minutes of the contest, but Tennessee Wesleyan found its comfort zone and began chipping away. The Bulldogs narrowed the gap and tied the game at 24-24 at the 7:20 mark in the opening half. Heather Gibson led the comeback charge with 11 first-half points. Both clubs struggled maintaining possession of the ball as Davenport had 13 turnovers and Tennessee Wesleyan gave it gave it away 15 times. At the start of the second half, the Bulldogs continued to hang with Davenport , but the Panthers began to pull away and lock in the win. The lead would grow to as many as 21 points on three occasions over the closing six minutes.

Davenport 's scoring charge was led by the 17-point outing by Kallie Benike. The junior guard knocked down both of her attempts from beyond the arc and converted 7-of-10 attempts from the charity stripe. She was aided by Kristi Hoehm's 12 points, nine of which were from long range. The Panthers finished the game 31-of-73 (.425).

Lindsey Jackson led all-scorers with 21 points, including six triples. Also registering double figures in the losing effort was Amy Jo Castor with a dozen. Six Bulldogs came off the bench and provided an offensive lift with 26 points. In 25 minuets of play, Heather Gibson knocked down four field goals, a 3-pointer and two free throws for 11 points.
