MARION, Ind. - Today marked the final day at the NAIA national outdoor track and field meet at Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, Ind., which saw Union College claim two national championships, an All-America honoree and a 13-place finish overall.

The two national championships are the first ever national titles for the school in its outdoor track and field history.

Claiming the first of two Union national championships was senior Armond Smith (Stone Mountain, Ga.) in the 110-hurdles where he clocked a time of 14.05.

Head Coach Jamaine Gordon commented on Smith's performance,"it was really up to Armond. He came to me two years ago and said he wanted to bring a national championship to Union and today he met his goal and I couldn't be more proud of him. He has worked really hard to win a national title and the majority of the congratulations should go to him."

"I want to thank everyone who supported me in my pursuit for a national championship," stated Armond Smith. "From my family to all the coaches, teammates and students at Union College, everyone has been really supportive. Two years ago I set my sights on bringing home a national crown to the Bulldogs and it feels really good that I met that goal today."

Claiming the second national title for the Bulldogs was its 4x100 relay team of James Fowler (Dallas, Texas), Armond Smith, Marekus Smith (Lithonia, Ga.) and Santraz Andrews (Griffin, Ga.), crossing the finish line in a time of 40.41. The finishing time for the relay team bested its previous top time by more than half of a second (41.06).

Smith also added to his national championships, earning All-American honors in the 200m after finishing fifth (21.09) in the last day of action at Indiana Wesleyan.

Union also saw James Fowler make it to the national final in the 100m, finishing ninth with a time of 10.67.

Overall, the Bulldogs notched the 13th spot, tallying 24-points overall.

"Going into nationals I could tell we were ready to perform well," comments Coach Gordon, "but to win two national titles and finish 13 overall is fantastic. I'm proud of our guys and I am glad that all of our hard work got to pay off."
