Bluefield, Va. -- Mike White comes to Bluefield from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise, which is also an Appalachian Athletic Conference member. White has spent the last six years at Wise as the team’s assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. This will be White’s first head coaching job and he feels more than ready to step in and leave his mark.
“Billy [Berry] did an excellent job and for the most part the program is in good shape,” White said. “The program just needs someone to come in and provide stability and that’s what I plan on doing. I expect to be here a good while and I hope to be a good representation of Bluefield College on and off the field.”
There is plenty of talent returning for the Ramblin’ Rams and despite a lot of coaching turnover the last few months, White feels the players have the right attitude going forward. “The club that is coming back is a veteran club,” White said. “This is a good opportunity for me to see how we grow as a club together. Preliminary indications are that the guys have the right approach and are anxious to get ready for next season.”
When it comes to recruiting, White already has a firm grasp on many of the same areas as Berry targeted. “I feel good about the roster intact and obviously recruiting is the name of the game in college athletics,” White said. “I’ve already made some pretty strong contacts throughout the state of Virginia.”
“I will primarily focus on recruiting in the Virginia Beach/Tidewater area, Richmond, DC, North Carolina, South Carolina,” White stated. “I also went down to Puerto Rico during my time at Wise and was fortunate enough to recruit some good talent, so expect me to kind of look all over for the best student-athletes.”
White says that he shares many of the same coaching characteristics as Hank Banner, who is the head coach at Uva-Wise, and will look to implement that style on the baseball diamond. When speaking of his managerial style, White said that he likes to “run, force the issue, and be aggressive.”
White earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in history with a minor in economics while a student-athlete at Uva-Wise. He also was a two-time NAIA All-American and two-time NAIA All-Region 7 selection, and was recently elected to the Uva-Wise Athletic Hall of Fame.
White is married to wife, Michele, and they have two sons – Dalton (11) and Connor (3).
