MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (December 14, 2005) --- Milligan College is pleased to announce the hiring of Milligan alumnus Ron Worrell as the new men’s and women’s head tennis coach. The college announced in October that it was expanding its tennis program, adding several additional athletic scholarships and elevating the current part-time coaching positions to one full-time coach for the men’s and women’s teams.

Worrell will take over the tennis programs and serve as director of intramurals beginning in Fall 2006. He will begin assisting and recruiting responsibilities in January. Rich Aubrey and Marvin Glover will continue to serve in their capacities with the men’s and women’s teams, respectively, for the spring 2006.

Worrell comes to Milligan after coaching stints at fellow Appalachian Athletic Conference schools Brevard College (2004-2005) and Virginia Intermont College (1998-2004). While at Brevard and Virginia Intermont, he also served as an instructor in the Exercise Science department.

During his tenure as the tennis director and men’s head coach at Virginia Intermont, he led the Cobras into the NAIA Top 25 rankings every year since 1999, including Top 10 rankings in 2003 and 2004. In his six seasons with the Cobras, the men’s tennis team captured five AAC Championships and three NAIA Region XII Championships. He was named AAC Men’s Coach of the Year five times and NAIA Region XII Coach of the Year three times. Worrell also coached the women’s team from 1998 to 2001, leading the Lady Cobras to the top 15 in the NAIA rankings.

Worrell graduated from Milligan in 1970 and then served as assistant intramural director, assistant baseball coach, and assistant men’s basketball coach at the college from 1970 to 1973. He served as head coach of the men’s tennis team at East Tennessee State University from 1973 to 1974 while working on his master’s degree in physical education. From 1974 to 1998, he worked as an audio engineer in Hollywood, Calif., and Nashville, Tenn., before returning to coach at Virginia Intermont.

In 2005, Milligan’s women’s tennis finished the season in a three-way tie for first place in the conference, won the AAC conference tournament, and were the runners-up in the Region XII tournament. The men’s team finished second in the AAC tournament and earned a berth to the Region XII tournament.
