Brevard College hires new Women’s Basketball Coach

Brevard College has hired Bill Wilson to be head coach of the Lady Tornados basketball team.

“We are thrilled to have Bill join our staff,” said Mike Jones, head men’s basketball coach and head of the search committee. “We think he will have an immediate positive impact on our women’s basketball program.”

He takes over a highly successful program. The Lady Tornados finished the 2004-2005 season 25-7, first place in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Wilson comes to Brevard College after completing his ninth season as head women’s basketball coach at Upper Iowa University (UIU), a NCAA Division II school. During his tenure at UIU, he set a university record for most career wins (99) and became the only women’s coach in UIU athletics history to be named coach of the year by both the Iowa Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA).

“I am very excited about the opportunity to lead Brevard’s women’s basketball program,” Wilson said. “I am looking forward to being a part of President Drew Van Horn’s vision for the College and working side by side with men’s head coach Mike Jones and the rest of the athletic department. The success the Lady Tornados have experienced in recent years has created what every college team strives for -- a strong foundation, a tradition. One of the ingredients to tradition is championships and that is what we will strive for every day on the basketball court.”

While at UIU, Wilson led the team to a 19-7 record and broke 12 team records, a team best. His teams defeated five nationally ranked teams during his tenure; set 37 individual/team records; and produced six All-Conference players and six 1000 point scorers.

His achievements as leader extend beyond the basketball court as well. While at UIU, Wilson’s teams maintained a 100-percent graduation rate and consistently maintained the highest team grade-point-average of any athletic team. He plans to bring the same academic standards to Brevard.
“As much as we will strive for great things on the basketball court, we will strive for even greater things off the court,” Wilson said. “Our players will excel in the classroom, graduate and represent Brevard College out in the world in the highest possible standard.”

Before arriving at UIU, he worked as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Slippery Rock University in Pennsylvania and as an assistant coach with the Slippery Rock men’s program.

He attained his bachelor’s degree in physical education from Eastern Kentucky University and earned his masters in education and athletics administration from Slippery Rock.
