GULF SHORES, Ala. - Reinhardt (Ga.) seized the early lead and never let go of it as the Lady Eagles up set fourth-ranked Central Baptist (Ark.) 3-0 in pool play at the NAIA Softball National Championship Tournament on Friday.
The tournament is being held at the Gulf Shores Complex in Gulf Shores, Ala.
The victory not only improved Reinhardt to 35-12 overall and 1-1 in pool play, but it was also the first victory for an Appalachian Athletic Conference team at the NAIA Softball National Championship Tournament.
The loss was just the sixth on the year for Central Baptist, dropping it to 51-6 overall and 1-1 in pool play.
Reinhardt jumped out to 3-0 lead in the first and pitcher Maddie Monroe took care of the rest. Nikki Roddy scored the game's first run thanks to a Central Baptist error. Ashley Kennedy then knocked in a run with a sequeeze bunt for a 2-0 advantage. Haley Brannon followed with a sac fly to score Andrea Thibaudeau for a three-run cushion.
Monroe polished off Central Baptist by allowing only three hits and three walks while striking out eight in collecting the complete-game, shutout victory.
Reinhardt wraps up pool play against Morningside (Iowa) on Satruday. Game time is set for 11:30 a.m. CDT.
