(BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - April 6) - Junior Kaila McSpedon etched her named in the record book on Thursday, but it mattered little as Union College dropped a pair of two-run decisions to visiting Pikeville (Ky.) College.
Pikeville shutout Union 2-0 in the opener and then held off the awakened UC offense in a 11-9 slugfest. The losses dropped the Lady Bulldogs to 12-26 overall.
McSpedon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) entered the game tied with Mandy Phifer for most hits in a season by a Lady Bulldog at 48. But in the bottom of the fourth, she dropped a single into centerfield to make the record all her own. She finished the game 1 for 3.
In the second game, McSpedon lined a couple more base hits in becoming the first Lady Bulldog to reach the 50-hit plateau in school history. Going 2 of 5 at the plate with two runs scored, McSpedon now has 51 hits on the season and has a .425 batting average.
Union will get back into Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Saturday when it will pay Milligan (Tenn.) College a visit at 2 p.m.
