MONTREAT, NC (August 24, 2005) --- The Montreat College Athletic Department is proud to announce the addition of Jonathan Holmes to the Athletic Staff.  Jonathan will serve as Assistant Coach for mens varsity basketball and head coach of the mens junior varsity basketball program.  Montreat announced early this summer the addition of mens junior varsity basketball to the athletic department. Cavalier Athletic Director and Mens Head Basketball Coach Bill Robinson knows Coach Holmes is a great asset to the college and program.   "We are extremely blessed to add a person like Jonathan to our athletic staff.   His experience as a player at Chapel Hill and overseas will enable him to be a great role model to both our JV and Varsity basketball teams here at Montreat.    He has a great mind and enthusiasm for the game of basketball and he fits right in with the Christian mission of the college.   He will be a great addition to our college community."

A native of Bloomington, Indiana, Holmes, under the coaching of his father, was a four-year varsity basketball starter for Bloomington South.  With a 4.0 GPA, Holmes was selected as Co-Valedictorian of his senior class, 1999 runner-up for Indiana Mr. Basketball, Nike High School All-American, McDonalds All-American Nominee, two-time first team All-State in Indiana, and a 1999 John Wooden Citizenship Award recipient.   Jonathan is the Bloomington South career record holder for points scored, assists, free throw percentage, consecutive games started (96), and 3-points made.  He is the second all-time in Monroe County for points scored in a career (behind Sean May).

As a 2003 graduate of the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill, Holmes maintained a 3.6 GPA and received a degree in Communications.   Holmes received a full basketball scholarship to play for the Tarheels.  As a four-year letterman, Holmes played for Coaches Bill Guthridge and Matt Doherty.   As a Tarheel, Holmes played in the 2000 NCAA Final Four in Indianapolis and was part of the team that won the 1999 Maui Invitational and 2002 Preseason NIT.  Jonathan was also named to the ACC All-Academic Team.  His Tarheel career game highs included: Points-9 (vs. Tulsa), Assists-6 (vs. FSU, Tulsa), Rebounds-5 (vs. Tulsa), 3-point made-2 (vs. Duke).

Holmes professional basketball career includes two seasons in Europe, 2003-2004 season for Leicester Riders in Leicester, England (British Basketball League), 2004-2005 season for Horsens IC in Horsens, Denmark (Danish Basketligaen).  During the 2004-2005 season in Denmark, Holmes averaged 14 points and five assists.  He also conducted basketball camps in Indiana and North Carolina from 1999-2005.

Born on March 31, 1980, Jonathan is the son of J.R. & Martha Holmes.  Jonathan has one sister Meredith Holmes who is a senior at Virginia Tech.  About his arrival at Montreat Jonathan states, I am excited to begin my coaching career at Montreat College.  The people of Montreat have been very welcoming to me, and I am grateful that I have an opportunity to work in such a positive environment, alongside such great people.  I am also looking forward to a return to the state of North Carolina after spending four years here as a student and basketball player at UNC.  I look forward to an exciting season of Cavalier Basketball!
