RICHMOND, KY (April 19, 2006) --- The Milligan College men’s golf team won the 2006 Appalachian Athletic Conference championship Wednesday afternoon, the Buffs held onto their opening day, 36-hole lead to win the AAC title. Milligan also led after the first two rounds of the NAIA Region XII tournament.

The AAC Tournament is played within the NAIA Region XII Tournament. This year the NAIA Region XII and AAC Tournaments were played at the 7,200 yard, par 72 Gibson Bay Country Club in Richmond, Ky.

Milligan finished one shot behind NAIA Region XII champion Brescia (Ky.) University, a member of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Brescia finished with a three round total of 905 (301-305-299), while the Buffs finished with a 906 (300-302-304). With the Region XII championship, Brescia earns a birth into the NAIA National Championship, to be held May 16-19.

The Buffs shot opening rounds of 300 and 302 on Tuesday to hold a four shot lead over fellow AAC member Bluefield (Va.) College and Brescia. Brevard (N.C.) College trailed Milligan by five shots after Tuesday.

In the final round on Wednesday, Brescia shot a 299 to overtake the Milligan lead. The Buffs shot a final round 304, finishing one shot ahead of Brevard (308-300-299).

Milligan’s lone senior Aaron Jessee (Gray, Tenn.) finished with a three round total of 224 (74-72-78), which placed Jessee on the All-Region XII and All-AAC teams. Sophomore Grayson Patton (Fries, Va.) earned All-AAC honors for the second time with a 227 (73-80-74). Patton won last year’s Region XII and AAC championships.

Also for the Buffs, head coach Tony Wallingford was named AAC Coach of the Year.

Juniors Ryan Morris (Frankfort, Ind.), Matt Barefoot (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Matt Ongie (Johnson City, Tenn.) recorded three round totals of 229, 232 and 233 respectively for the Milligan at the championship.

This is the second AAC championship for Milligan in the last three seasons, with an AAC title in 2004, followed by a conference runner-up finish last season.
