
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (June 1, 2006) --- Milligan College tennis standout Cassie Lomison, a senior from New Castle, Ind., has been named the 2006 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA)/NAIA Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award recipient. Chosen for her outstanding sportsmanship and leadership, as well as scholastic, extracurricular and tennis achievements, this prestigious honor is awarded annually to one female and one male tennis player from the NAIA’s 289 member schools.
Lomison finished her intercollegiate career with a 48-18 career record in singles, including a 16-4 senior campaign. She was named to the All-Appalachian Athletic Conference team four years and was named the 2005 NAIA Region XII Player of the Year.
During the Spring 2006 season, Lomison went 12-1 in single’s competitions and was ranked as high as 28th nationally in the FILA/ITA NAIA Rankings. In the final FILA/ITA season poll, Lomison was ranked 45th.
"I am honored that I was selected as the recipient of such a wonderful award,” said Lomison.
During her four years at Milligan, Lomison was named to the AAC Champion of Character team each season. In 2006, she won the AAC Women’s Tennis Sportswoman of the Year, along with a spot on the AAC All-Sportsmanship team for a third straight year.
In the classroom, Lomison was named to the Milligan College Dean’s List three times and was on the AAC All-Academic team three seasons. She and her teammates were selected as a NAIA Scholar Team in 2005.
While at Milligan Lomison was active with the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, volunteering at assisted living facilities and with other campus projects. Additionally, she led the children’s ministry at her local church.
"Cassie is simply outstanding in every sense of the word as it applies to the student-athlete,” said Milligan head coach Marvin Glover. “I am certainly proud of her accomplishments.”
