Olathe, KS - The Covenant College women's soccer team garnered more post-season honors on Tuesday night, as they were named the national winner of the Champion of Character award at the NAIA national tournament banquet. Senior defender Ashley Wood was one of twenty individual honorees as a Champion of Character.


The NAIA Champion of Character award is given at the conference level in each sport, as well as to national winners, for both teams and individual student-athletes. The Champion of Character award recognizes and honors winners that best exemplify the five character qualities of respect, integrity, sportsmanship, responsibility, and servant leadership.

Head coach Mark Duble said that is was great to win the award and to have the players at the nationals to receive it made it more enjoyable. He said that the award was partly for the players' regular summer participation in a soccer program for the underprivileged children in the East Chattanooga neighborhood.

The Lady Scots earned an at-large bid into this week's national tournament, after compiling a 15-3 record and winning the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships and moving as high as eighth in the national rankings. Covenant is seeded ninth in the national tournament and will play the eighth-seed Westmont College on Friday afternoon at 1:00 ET - in a match that can be followed through a live web-cast on www.naia.cstv.com.
