Sarah Helton became the second UVA-Wise women’s basketball player to reach 2,000 career points while helping defeating Virginia Intermont College, 89-66, Saturday afternoon.
Wise, VA – Sarah Helton became the second UVA-Wise women’s basketball player to reach 2,000 career points while helping defeating Virginia Intermont College, 89-66, Saturday afternoon.
Helton laid in a basket with 15:53 left in the game for the last two points of the 20 she needed going into the day for the 2,000-point milestone. Sarah is now only second to Christy Gray-Dalton (1994-98) who had 2,172 career points in school history. She hit nine of 18 attempts for 24 points to aid the Lady Cavs improve to 5-18 and 4-8 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Sarah also had five rebounds, five assists and six steals.
Rachel Helton equaled her sister with 24 points of her own on nine of 12 from the floor including six of nine treys. Chelsea Lee added 16 points and five assists. Freshman Sheila Royall had a big game off the bench with 13 points on five of six shooting and a game-best nine caroms. Kim Norris added nine tallies.
The Lady Cobras (6-15/5-7 AAC) received 18 points from Autumn Arney. Ida Sammons chipped in nine points.
UVA-Wise scored the contest’s first 11 points and led 20-4 after more than six minutes into the game. The Lady Cavs saw the Lady Cobras fight back to within seven before a Rachel Helton jumper made it 42-32 at the half.
Virginia Intermont pull to within eight, 44-36, two minutes into the second half. From there, UVA-Wise took control for good by going on a 19-2 run in the next five minutes to make the margin 63-38. The Lady Cobras came back to no closer than 14 points, 78-64, before falling 89-66.
UVA-Wise will next host King College on Tuesday night at 5:30 p.m.
