SAVANNAH, Ga. - March 10 - Union College went 1-2 on the final day of its appearance in the Smash Hit Tournament hosted by Savannah (Ga.) College Art & Design on Saturday as freshman Sarah Driver added her second record to resume.
Union defeated Malone (Ohio) College 10-2 before falling 9-0 to No. 11 SCAD and 7-5 to University of St. Francis (Ind.).
Driver (Hopkinsville, Ky.) entered the day tied for the season record for most strikeouts at 77. She fanned six in the win over Malone and added 11 in the 7-5 loss to St. Francis, giving her 94 on the year in just 11 games pitched. The 11 strikeouts against St. Francis marked the fourth time this season Driver has hit double-digits. Before her, no Lady Bulldog had tossed more than nine strikeouts in a game.
On the year, Driver has a 2.02 earned-run average with 5-4 record, 94 strikeouts and 30 walks in 66.0 innings pitched. The career record for strikeouts is 130, held by Monica Valdez.
Against Malone, Union ripped 12 hits en route to the 10-2 win. Lyla Blauser (Hopkinsville, Ky.) score three times, while Driver, Samantha Bridges (Jackson, Tenn.), Kaila McSpedon (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Suzannah Behnken (Tempe, Ariz.) all drove in two runs. McSpedon and Behnken each belted a two-run home run in the win.
Union's offense was non-existent in the 9-0 loss to SCAD as the Lady Bulldogs managed just three hits. The Lady Bees scored twice in the first before exploding for seven in the second.
Bridges and Lee Davis (Lexington, Ky.) each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs in the 7-5 loss to St. Francis. Union led 5-2 going into the seventh; however, St. Francis rallied for five runs - four unearned, to pull out the win.
The Lady Bulldogs (8-10 overall) returns to action on Tuesday when they pay Berea (Ky.) College a visit at 5:30 p.m.
