WILLIAMSBURG, Ky. - March 20 - Kenny Kysar collected two hits in Tuesday's 2-1 Union College win at University of the Cumberlands (Ky.), but one was all he needed to extend his hitting streak to a school-record 21 games.
Kysar's 21-game streak surpasses the old mark of 20 games, which was set by Jake Allen during the 2004 campaign. The Corbin, Ky. native went 2-for-4 with a run scored to improve his team-leading batting average to .486.
With the one-run decision, Union extended its current win streak to eight games and improved to 22-5 on the year. The loss dropped Cumberlands to 21-8.
The Bulldogs drew first blood in the second when Josh Ehringer (Somerset, Ky.) scored off of Joe Grinstead's (Bowling Green, Ky.) sac fly. In the sixth, Union took a 2-0 lead when Justin Hart (Lake Mary, Fla.) singled in Kysar.
Cumberlands picked up its only run in the bottom of the sixth when Robert Matthew Mills doubled in Luis Raffan.
Marty Popham (Louisville, Ky.) pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-hit, shutout ball to pick up the win. He fanned six in improving his record to 2-2. Chaz Bargo (Artemus, Ky.) struck out five and gave up two hits in tossing a scoreless seventh, eighth and ninth inning in picking up his third save of the year.
Hart led Union offensively in going 3-for-4 with a double and a RBI. Matt Brady (Louisville, Ky.) was 2-for-2 with a walk.
Union returns home Wednesday for a doubleheader against Pikeville (Ky.) College at 1:30 p.m.
