LONDON, Ky. - April 11 - Men's Tennis - This year, Union College is second to none.
After finishing second the past two seasons, the No. 16 Bulldogs have captured their first-ever Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship Wednesday when they defeated visiting Virginia Intermont College 5-1.
"This is a great accomplishment for the program and for all the guys," said Union coach Renzo Lopez. "They have worked hard the past two years and all season to finally win the championship. I couldn't be prouder of them."
In its third year as a sponsored intercollegiate sport, Union (13-3 overall, 5-0 AAC) finished second in the AAC in 2005 and 2006 to Virginia Intermont. Now, the table has been turned as the Cobras (5-4 overall, 3-1 AAC) are playing second fiddle to the Bulldogs.
Pablo Costa (San Pedro Sula, Honduras) had a very good day, winning his singles match 6-1, 6-2 over Jonathan Berhane. He teamed up with Juan Manuel Lorenzo (Barcelona, Spain) to blank Berhane and Phillipe Fonseca 8-0 in doubles play.
Union will close out the regular second on Saturday when it plays host to Bellarmine (Ky.) University at 2 p.m.
