BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Brooke Smith continued rewritting the record book Saturday as she poured in a school-record 54 points in a wild 127-116 Union College victory over Berea (Ky.) College in the Union College Holiday Classic.

"Once I got us to understand what we had available offensively, our kids did a good job of getting the ball down there,' said Union head coach Tim Curry of Smith. "She is one of the best post players in the country. She can have an off night like she did last night and get 24; she's that good."

Union and Berea combined for 243 points, shatterting the NAIA Division II record of 230, which was set Nov. 14, 2004, when Berea beat Wilberforce (Ohio) 117-113. Berea's 113 points is also a record for most points by a losing team.

Smith (Pineville, Ky.) also set a school record for most field goals made in a game as she went 20 of 28 from the field. Additionally, she had a career-high 16 rebounds and was 14 of 16 from the foul line. Her previous career-high was 34 points. The previous program record was 42 set by Malissa Hutchins back in during the 1987-88 season. The men's basketball record is 45 points, which was set by Fred Calloway back during the 1987-88 season as well.

"It was amazing, and I'm really blessed to have teammates who are willing to sacrifice and do whatever it takes to win," Smith said of her performance.

"Susanna (Todd) walked up to me and told me I had 50, and I told her to shut up."

Union also set a program record with 127 points scored in a game. The previous high was 123 against Mount Vernon Nazarene (Ohio) University on Nov. 5, 2004.

The Lady Bulldogs nearly set the record for most points in a half but missed by one points. Union tallied 75 second-half points, one shy of the record of 76 held by Tusculum (Tenn.) College. Tusuculum set the mark on Jan. 25, 1993, against Bluefield (Va.) College.

"It's just crazy how much we're capable of," Smith said. "And tonight made me realize what we're really capable of when we get down and play."

Union is now 10-4 overall, while Berea is 9-6 overall.

Down 64-52 at the half, Union got off to a slow start in the second half as Berea built an 18-point lead at 72-54 with 18:31 to go. But Union went on 25-7 run to knot the score at 79-all with 13:46 to play. During the run, Smith had 12 points.

After some back-and-forth play, Union opened up a 92-85 lead following a pair of Smith free throws with 10:18 to go. Union's lead hit double-digits when Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) connected on a pair of free throws to make it 117-107 with 2:17 to go. Union led by as many as 16 en route to the 127-116 victory.

In all, six Lady Bulldogs scored in double figures. After Smith, Union was led by Allison Fowler (Morganfield, Ky.) with 20. Todd had 15, while Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) had 13 points and a career-high nine assists. Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) and Jessica Baker (Canmer, Ky.) added 12 and 10 points, respectively.

For Berea, Ashley Jade Howard netted 27 points with Heather Hutchins adding 21. Stephanie Corry chipped in 18, while Sa'De Mullins and Ann Bruce Madden had 15 and 12, respectively. Brittany Manns helped out with 10.

Union also outrebounded Berea 55-50 and went 40 of 56 from the foul line.

Union returns to action on Jan. 5 when is pays Pikeville (Ky.) College 2 p.m.
