BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Brooke Smith recorded her 1,000th career point Saturday as Union College posted an 81-65 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory over visiting Virginia Intermont College.

The win extended Union's win streak to 10 games while improving its records to 13-4 overall and 6-0 in league play. VIC dropped to 5-11 overall and 2-4 in the conference.

Smith (Pineville, Ky.) had a rough outing in going 4-of-11 from the floor, but she went 9-of-12 from the foul line in netting 17 points to give her 1,001 career points. She is the fastest player in Lady Bulldog history to get to 1,000 points, having reached the mark in just her 51st career game.

Neither shot the ball well as both were under 40 percent from the floor in the first half. Both teams picked it up in the second half as Union finished making 46.4 percent (26 of 56 shots) with VIC hitting 40.0 percent (28 of 70 shots) of its shots.

Union struggled to gain some consistency in the first half. After an Autumn Arney field goal at the 11:43 mark, VIC evened the score at 15-all. However, Union embarked on an 18-4 rally to open up a 33-19 lead at the 6:04 mark. During the run, Smith and Susanna Todd (Eubank, Ky.) accounted for five points apiece.

VIC tried to rally in the second half, cutting the margin to 51-42 following a Michelle Shockley bucket at 12:17.  But that was as close as VIC could get as Union eventually built the lead back up to 19 points (75-56) with 3:13 to play. Union went on to win 81-65.

Smith also grabbed seven rebounds as Union outrebounding VIC 45-40. Ashley Lunsford (Orlando, Ky.) led Union with 10 boards to go along with her six points.

After Smith, Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) paced Union with 16points, while Todd and Allyson Campassi (Frankfort, Ky.) chipped in 11 and 11 points.

For VIC, Shockley set the pace with 20 points with Haley Odle and Arney following with 13 points each.

Union steadily padded the margin, taking a 43-25 lead into the half.

Union returns to action Tuesday when it pays Milligan (Tenn.) College a visit. The AAC tilt is set to start at 5:30 p.m.
