BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Union College senior Allison Fowler has been selected as a member of the 2008 ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA Women's Basketball Academic All-District IV College Division First Team, the organization announced Thursday.
Fowler (Morganfield, Ky.) is the first student-athlete in school history to make the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team twice as she received the honor in 2007 squad. The 5-foot-7 guard made the Second Team in 2006.
CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America) annually names Academic All-America teams in all sports. CoSIDA was established in 1957, and the Academic All-America program dates back to 1952.
To qualify for the Academic All-America Team, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.20, be a sophomore, junior or senior and player in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed. Each sport is divided into two divisions, University and College. The University Division includes all NCAA Division I schools, while the College Division encompasses all NCAA II, III and NAIA institutions.
CoSIDA is also separated into eight districts. District IV includes all institutions in Alabama, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Tennessee.
On the season, Fowler is averaging 12.9 points and 3.67 rebounds per game. She leads the team in assists (101) and steals (74). For her career, Fowler ranks sixth on the Lady Bulldogs' all-time scoring list with 1,277 career points and 10th on the all-time rebounding list with 383.
A biology major, Fowler is a two-time Appalachian Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection and was a 2007 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
By earning a spot on the All-District First Team, Fowler is now eligible to be selected for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Team.
Union is 17-7 overall and 10-3 in Appalachian Athletic Conference play. The Lady Bulldogs will play host to Bluefield (Va.) College Saturday at 4 p.m.
