Students and workers with the Asheville Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club came to Montreat College's McAlistair Gymnasium for a clinic with the Men's and Women's Montreat College basketball teams on Wednesday
Over 50 children came out for the afternoon to play ball and move through a series of skills clinics with the college players. Last semester, the kids visited Montreat College for a similar event with the soccer teams on campus. Brian Guengerich, Area Director for the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club says, "It's not too often that the kids here at the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club get an opportunity such as this to experience what it is like to be a part of a college team. I feel like these clinics are truly beneficial for our kids not only to get a little taste of college sports, but also to see and be a part of the Montreat College family. Seeing the joy this brings to our kids is truly rewarding and there really is no better atmosphere to learn about basketball. The Montreat College coaches and staff are such positive role models for our kids and we are so thankful for them providing us with this opportunity."
Jonathan Bennett, Athletic Director at Montreat College says, "It's a great opportunity for Montreat College and the athletic department to be involved with such a fabulous organization. I hope that the kids get as much out of these clinics as our student-athletes and coaches."
Bill Robinson is the head coach for the Montreat College Cavaliers Men's Basketball team. He says, "We are always excited about working with the Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club. We feel like both of our missions of impacting kids align so well. Hopefully the short time we spend on the court with them will motivate these kids to want to be better basketball players."
Montreat College is a Christ-centered liberal arts institution with its main campus for four-year traditional students in Montreat.
