BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Susanna Todd became the latest player to join the 1,000-Point Club as Union College was able to hold off visiting Milligan (Tenn.) College 78-70 in Appalachian Athletic Conference action Saturday.
With the win, Union improved to 20-7 overall and 13-3 in league play. This marks the fourth time in program history and third time under head coach Tim Curry Union has won 20 games in a season.
Milligan dropped 15-13 overall and 12-4 in the AAC.
Todd (Eubank, Ky.) scored nine points to give the junior guard exactly 1,000 career points. She is the 12th player in program history to reach the milestone and joins teammates Allison Fowler (Morganfield, Ky.) and Brooke Smith (Pineville, Ky.) in the club.
With only three points at the half, Todd waited until the stretch drive to etch her name into the history books. Up three, Todd scored on a layup to give Union a 66-61 advantage with 4:21 to play. Union extended the margin to nine when Todd was fouled with 33 seconds remaining. After she made both free throws, Union's lead was 74-63.
However, Kara Monk buried a 3-pointer to cut the margin to eight. On the ensuing in-bounds play, Todd was fouled again. The 5-foot-6 guard connected on both freebies from the line, giving Union a 76-66 lead with 27 seconds to play and Todd her 1,000th career point.
Brit White scored with 18 seconds to pull Milligan within 76-68. After Fowler made a pair of free throws to make a 10-point game, Heather Mandela was fouled and made two from the line, pulling Milligan with 78-70 with eight seconds left. But that was as close as Milligan could get at Union held on for the win.
Smith and Fowler paced Union with 19 points and eight rebounds apiece. Carley Blankenship (Lexington, Ky.) chipped in 10 points and seven assists.
For Milligan, Rikki Baughman led the way with 19 points and eight rebounds, while Mandela chipped in 14 points. Kara Monk knocked in 13 points as well.
Much of the game was spent at the foul line, and both team were near perfect. Union hit 25-of-26 free throws (96.2 percent) while Milligan went 18-of-21 (85.7 percent) at the line.
Union also won the battle on the boards, outrebounding Milligan 43-33.
Union returns to action Tuesday at Bryan (Tenn.) College. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
