BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - Senior Allison Fowler of Union College made history Tuesday as she became the first student-athlete in school history to make a CoSIDA Academic All-America First Team as she earned a spot on the 2008 ESPN the Magazine CoSIDA Academic All-America College Division team.
Fowler (Morganfield, Ky.) is the fourth student-athlete and first female in Union history to make an Academic All-America Team, joining Kevin Smith (Baseball - 2006, Second Team), Ivan Mardones (Men's At-Large (Tennis) - 2007, Third Team) and Patrick O'Neal (Football - 2007, Second Team).
CoSIDA (the College Sports Information Directors of America) annually names Academic All-America teams in all sports. CoSIDA was established in 1957, and the Academic All-America program dates back to 1952.
To qualify for the Academic All-America Team, a student-athlete must maintain a minimum grade-point average of 3.20, be a sophomore, junior or senior and player in at least 50 percent of the team's games at the position listed. Each sport is divided into two divisions, University and College. The University Division includes all NCAA Division I schools, while the College Division encompasses all NCAA II, III and NAIA institutions.
On the season, Fowler is averaging 12.7 points and 3.90 rebounds per game. She leads the team in assists (127) and steals (86). For her career, Fowler ranks fourth on the Lady Bulldogs' all-time scoring list with 1,348 career points, 10th on the all-time rebounding list with 412, second all-time in assists with 404 and second all-time in steals with 260.
A biology major, Fowler is a two-time Appalachian Athletic Conference All-Academic Team selection and was a 2007 Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.
Union, which won a share of the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular-season championship, is 22-8 overall and opens Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament play Thursday at 1:45 p.m.
