Pair of Bulldogs run to All-American honors

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. – Two Union College Bulldogs, Johnnie Nabors and Andre Thornton,earned All-American status for their runs in Saturday's finalsat the NAIA Indoor Track & Field National Championships.

Nabors is a junior from Lawrenceville, Ga. while Thorntonis also a junior and a Loganville, Ga. native. Both achieved the All-American honorsfor the Bulldogs inside East Tennessee State University’s Memorial Center. Nabors repeated his 2007 All-American effort in the 60 meters while Thornton’s All-American run was in the 200 meters and the first of his career.

Nabors was the first Bulldog on the day to become an All-American with his third-place finish. He posted a time of 6.85 seconds. This marks the second year in a row Nabors has finished third in the 60 meters. He becomes the first Bulldog to be a two-time All-American in the track and field ranks.

Only .02 seconds separated second place from fourth place. Michael Sands of Dickinson State (N.D.) University was second, .01 second in front of Nabors. Tyrell Cuffy of King (Tenn.) College was fourth with a time of 6.86 seconds.

Doane (Neb.) College’s Paulvince Obuon took the top spot in the 60 meters with a 6.78 second performance. Olasubomi Bashorun and Kesonn Lee finished fifth and sixth, respectively. Oklahoma Baptist University’s Bashorun narrowly beat Lee of Indiana Tech by .004 seconds.

Later in the day, in the 200 meters, Thornton ran the distance in 22.15 seconds and finished second in his section and fifth overall.

Dominique Matthews of Oklahoma Baptist took the top spot after he ran 21.52. Obuon was second, .06 seconds behind Matthews, and Cuffy was third. Thornton was just .62 seconds away from fourth-place Jordan Jeffers ofthe University of the Cumberlands (Ky.) and he was .15 seconds in front of MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) University’s Hylton Campbell who came in sixth.

In the team standings, Union collected eight points which placed the Bulldogs in a six-way tie for 24th.

Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University took the men's team championship over Oklahoma Baptist University in the closest NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field National Championship in the 43-year history. Azusa Pacific collected 64.75 points and Oklahoma Baptist racked up 64 points. Dickinson State was third with 55 points, followed by Doane's 42 points. Black Hills State University rounded out the Top-5 with 29 points.
