KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Brice Cutspec of Azusa Pacific (Calif.) has been selected as the NAIA Baseball Player of the Week while Garrett Jones
of Montreat (N.C.) was awarded the NAIA Baseball Pitcher of the Week,
for the week of April 13-19. The honor marks the first for Montreat
College baseball this season.
Jones,
a 5-10 senior from Elwood, Ind., made the most of two starts on the
mound for the Cavaliers last week. In the 6-2 win over No. 5 Union
(Ky.), Garrett pushed a no-hitter into the sixth inning before settling
for a two-hit, seven-strikeout performance against the Bulldogs. Then,
he went 10 full innings, shutting down King (Tenn.) 2-0 on the road.
The Tornado, which held a 30-13 record, managed just four hits and
fanned seven times.
For the week, Garrett tossed 17.0 innings
and allowed six hits, one earned run and eight walks while striking out
14 batters. In 14 games this year, he is 6-4 overall and holds a 4.55
ERA in 61 1/3 innings. Jones is #2 in the AAC in strike outs per game
(9.54).
The final 2009 Players of the Week will be announced on April 28.
