MONTREAT, NC (April 21, 2009) -- Monday night was a big night for junior Cameron Duckworth. At the annual Montreat College Athletics banquet, with his family present, Cam was honored as the 2008-09 Male Athlete of the Year. On Tuesday, he answered the call when in the Cavs doubleheader against Southern Virginia, Duckworth ended a three-week drought by hitting four homeruns. His last homerun came in their conference series against Milligan College back on March 21, 2009. Cam has been battling an achilles injury the latter part of the season.
Not only did Cam end a drought, but he smashed the program's most homeruns hit in a single season record. In game one, Cam's two homeruns tied the record at 18. The record was set in 2000 by Montreat College baseball alum Curtis Hughes. In game two, Cam smashed two more bombs to become the all-time leader for homeruns hit in a single season with 20.
Cam is now #3 in the NAIA in homeruns per game (.488) and #1 in the AAC. His closes competitor in this category in the AAC is teammate Josh Ashton with 15 homeruns. In his two years at Montreat, he is #7 in most homeruns in a career with 28. Joe Snyder holds that record with 51 set from 1994-1997.
The Cavs would go on to win both games against Southern Virginia. 16-7 and 14-11.
