Pool play began today in the AAC Volleyball tournament.  There were no real surprises, with higher-seeded teams winning the first round of matches. The top three seeds, Union, Bryan, and Montreat, swept their opening rounds, while Bluefield defeated Tennessee Wesleyan in four.

#1Union defeats #9 Tennessee Wesleyan, 3-0 (25-12, 25-14, 25-16)
Monica Moreland dished out 24 assists, while Maddie Peterson collected nine kills and four aces to pace the Bulldogs.  Christina Prindle added four aces as well.  For Tennessee Wesleyan, Brittany Adams collected five kills while Whitney Ottow contributed nine digs in a losing effort.
 
#2 Bryan defeats #8 Virginia Intermont 3-0 (25-11, 25-16, 25-14)
Amber Smith paced the Lions with 11 kills and three assisted blocks, while Ashley Sours and Alison Young added seven kills apiece.  Hannah Suits and Amanda Manke combined for 36 assists.  For Virginia Intermont, Brandi Blessing contributed 8 kills and 3 solo blocks, while Kaitlin Crutchley added 8 kills and Tori Starnes dished out 20 assists.
 
#3 Montreat defeats #7 UVA-Wise (25-9, 25-20, 25-21)
For Montreat, Anna Stephenson tallied 7 kills, 3 solo and 3 assisted blocks to pace the Cavaliers from North Carolina.  Allison Baumgartner contributed 2 solo and 5 assisted blocks, while Alyssa Kaufman added 11 digs and Chelsea Fleury dug up 13 digs.  For UVA-Wise, Kaitlyn Collins hit home 8 kills, Kelly Bumgarner dished out 19 assists and dug up 8 digs, whil Ruth Ann Hoover added 12 digs.
 
#6 Bluefield defeats #9 Tennessee Wesleyan 3-1 (16-25, 25-20, 25-19, 25-16)
Takashi Franklin led the Rams with 8 kills and 2 blocks.  Alyssa Weddle added 5 kills and 6 digs, while Felicia Marmo added 16 digs.  Wesleyan's Jaclyn Evans hit 7 kills and added 4 blocks, while Whitney Ottow had 17 digs.
 
Wednesday, the teams will gather to celebrate regular season awards at a 9:30 a.m. awards ceremony (free of charge).  Competitions will start up at 1:00 p.m.  Playoffs (if necessary) will be held at 8:00 p.m.
