No. 4 Montreat will face No. 2 Bryan College Saturday, November 14, at 2 p.m., for the AAC finals. Saturday's game will be played on the campus of King College in Bristol, Tennessee.
Bryan 1 - Union 0 (OT)
During the semifinals of the AAC Tournament No. 2 Bryan (Tenn.) College knocked off the No. 3 seeded Bulldogs of Union (Ky.) College, 1-0, in overtime.
Both teams remained scoreless in regulation, despite the Lions outshooting the Bulldogs 19-5. With just two minutes remaining in the first overtime period, AAC Player of the Year Daniel O'Kane found the back of the net from fellow Lion Markus Oettig to give Bryan the overtime victory.
Union's Jonathan Shaw recorded seven saves in between the posts, while Rodrigo Pigatto for the Lions tallied four saves and received the decision in the shutout.
The Bulldogs finish the season at 10-5-2 overall, while the Lions improves to 10-6.
Montreat 2 - Milligan 1
In the night cap of the AAC semifinals the No. 1 seeded Buffaloes from Milligan College fell to the No. 4 Cavaliers of Montreat (N.C.) College Friday night by a final of 2-1.
The Buffs came out strong controlling the opening half as they scored in the 15th minute when senior Travis Philips (Winston-Salem, N.C.) connected with sophomore Sandre Wilson (Mandeville, Jamaica). Wilson headed in a perfectly placed corner from Philips to give the Buffs a 1-0 advantage.
The momentum would quickly shift after the officials gave senior Franklin Mbouge (Yaoundé, Cameroon) a red card for a tackle made inside the box on a Cavs breakaway. Playing with only 10 men in orange and black would seem to hinder the Buffs post season hopes as play continued.
The Cavs answered in the 50th minute off of a Paul Connell goal compliments of Stephen Jackson to knot the game at a goal apiece. Nearing the end of regulation Montreat's Shaka Bangura kicked a knuckle ball that soared through the air and deceptively baffled All-AAC goal keeper Bryan Newbold (Sylva, N.C.) to give the Cavs the go ahead goal.
Milligan scrambled in the final seven minutes testing Montreat's keeper Howard Fisher, but the Buffs could not convert thus ending their storied season.
Newbold finished his stellar career at Milligan with a great performance in the posts tallying a game high eight saves in the effort, while Howard marked five for Montreat.
Milligan, the AAC regular season champions, ends their 2009 campaign with a league best 11-5-1 record, while Montreat improves to 9-8-1 and advances to the AAC finals.
