MILLIGAN, Tenn. – Second-seeded Reinhardt collected a 2-1 victory on Tuesday over host and No. 1 seed Milligan to win the 2020-21 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Tournament championship.
This is the Eagles' second tournament crown in the last three seasons.
Milligan and Reinhardt shared the regular-season title as both finished with identical 9-1 conference records. However, Milligan earned the No. 1 seed since it defeated Reinhardt 1-0 on Nov. 22.
The Eagles avenged that loss with a 2-1 decision in the championship match.
Reinhardt struck early when Phillip Frowis found the back of the net in the 10th minute. Milligan, though, pulled even before halftime when Jett Carter set up Elies Sebbouh in the 36th minute.
Arthur Hugon put the Eagles up for good with a goal in the 66th minute, making the final 2-1.
Reinhardt goalkeeper Nike Tzevelekos registered three saves in the title match in earning Tournament MVP honors. He finished the tournament with eight saves in all.
Joining him on the All-Tournament Team are Gus Fidler, Aaron Whitten, and Hugon of Reinhardt; Sebbough, Luke Bennett, and Charlie Betts of Milligan; Dave Neijenhuis and Harry Baggaley of Tennessee Wesleyan; and Alessandro Benedetti and Flavio Nardecchia of St. Andrews.
Reinhardt advances to the NAIA National Championship Tournament by virtue of winning the tournament. Milligan also advances as it received the league's automatic berth from the regular season.
The national tournament gets underway on April 22.
