ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Columbia International is the only Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) team to advance in the NAIA Men's Soccer Opening Round on Thursday.
Columbia International scored an overtime winner to defeat No. 3 seed Cumberlands (Ky.) 2-1 in the Mobile (Ala.) Bracket. Sohya Yamamoto scored in the 12th minute to give the Rams a 1-0 lead, which looked safe until Cumberlands scored in the 80th minute. However, Yamamoto netted the game-winner in the 98th minute to send Columbia International to the next round.
The Rams will face top-seeded Mobile on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET. The winner advances to the final site.
Unfortunately, three AAC teams fell in the opening round. Point lost 3-0 to Columbia (Mo.) in the Columbia Bracket, Milligan fell 3-1 to William Penn (Iowa) in the Fort Wayne (Ind.) Bracket, and Tennessee Wesleyan suffered a 1-0 defeat to Dalton State (Ga.) in the West Palm Beach (Fla.) Bracket.
