KINGSPORT, Tenn. – Brenau had to go the extra mile, but it the got the job done in capturing the 2021 Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) Softball Tournament championship on Friday.
The tournament is being held at the Brickyard Ball Fields in Kingsport, Tenn.
Reinhardt defeated Truett McConnell 10-7 to advance to the championship round and then handed Brenau its first loss of the tournament in an 8-4 affair. However, Brenau came back in the final game with a 10-0 outcome to win the title.
Faith Grooms was named the Tournament MVP. Joining her on the All-Tournament Team are Morgan Tyler, Abigail Brown, Hannah Patridge, and Cameron Dillard of Brenau; Megan Huss, Kyrstyn Fisher, Natalie Parlato, and Reagen Radke of Reinhardt; Alicia Price, Ashleigh Lawson, and Mattie Brooks of Truett McConnell; and Taylor Knight and Allie Beilstein of Point.
GAME 15 – REINHARDT 10, TRUETT MCCONNELL 7
Like a couple of heavyweight boxers, the two teams traded punches the entire game. However, Reinhardt delivered the knockout punch with a four-run sixth inning en route to the 10-7 victory in the losers' bracket finale.
Down 6-4, Reinhardt did not get the rally started until there were two outs. After back-to-back singles, Alise Hooks tripled down the left-field line to pull the Eagles level at 6-all. Natalie Parlato followed with a run-scoring single before eventually scoring on a wild pitch to put Reinhardt up 8-6.
Truett McConnell pushed a run across in the bottom of the sixth to cut the margin to one, but Reinhardt added two insurances runs in the seventh to complete the comeback and advance to the championship game.
Megan Huss scored three runs for Reinhardt, while Parlato went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
GAME 16 – CHAMPIONSHIP GAME 1 – REINHARDT 8, BRENAU 4
A pair of three-run rallies proved to be the difference as Reinhardt extended the tournament for one more game.
The Eagles scored first with two runs in the second, but the Tigers came back with a run in the second and third innings to tie the game up at 2-all.
In the fourth, Reinhardt strung three runs together to open up a 5-2 lead. Parlato scored on an Autumn Bible groundout, and Megan Huss followed with an RBI single. Emily Loveless capped the rally with a run-scoring double.
Brenau pulled within 5-4 in the fifth, but Reinhardt sealed the victory with a three-run seventh to make the final 8-4.
GAME 17 – CHAMPIONSHIP GAME 2 – BRENAU 10, REINHARDT 0
Brenau came out swinging, scoring two in the first, three in the second, and five in the third in quickly building a 10-0 cushion.
Grooms led the attack in going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and two RBI, while Brown went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
The Tigers outhit the Eagles 12-4 in the decisive game.
