AAC Announces Women's Basketball All-Conference Awards
KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Appalachian Athletic Conference announced the 2013-14 Women's Basketball All-Conference Team on Wednesday, and Armeka Booker of Tennessee Wesleyan is the AAC Player of the Year.
Booker helped lead Tennessee Wesleyan to the regular-season championship, and Lady Bulldog head coach Jeff Rice is the AAC Coach of the Year. Tennessee Wesleyan is also the Champions of Character winner.
Other individual award winners are Keila Formont of Bryan as the Defensive Player of the Year and Dereese Owens of Point as the Freshman of the Year.
Booker led the AAC in scoring this season with 19.038 points per game to go along her 10.346 rebounds per game average. In addition, she blocked 43 shots and ranked in the top 50 in nine categories in NAIA Division II. Booker was named the AAC Player of the Week six times this season.
Formont recorded 62 steals to rank 49th in the nation and blocked nine shots to earn top defensive honors. She also averaged 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
Owens led Point in scoring with 18.3 points per game and averaged 3.5 rebounds an outing. She also recorded 77 steals and 64 assists.
Joining Booker on the All-AAC first team are Owens, Rainey Story of Virginia Intermont, Kayla Kelly of Milligan and Lydia Nash of Union.
Cody Houck and Shira Buley represent Tennessee Wesleyan on the All-AAC second team and are joined by Alexandria Gellman of Montreat, and Haley Perkins and Amber Taylor of Union.
Formont landed on the All-AAC third team along with Kristin Lane of Bryan, Tia Gasque of St. Andrews, Kayla Orrick of Virginia Intermont and Taylor Johnson of Reinhardt.
Making up the All-Defensive Team are Formont, Buley, Taylor, Owens, April Besley and Payton Smith of Reinhardt.
The All-Freshmen Team consists of Owens, Lane, Smith, Hayley Wyrick of Milligan, Megan Billingsby of Bryan, Azia Gibson and Kaitlyn Smart of Columbia.
Forty student-athletes made the All-Academic Team with Milligan leading the way with six on the squad.
