Two from AAC Collect NAIA All-American Honors
ASHEVILLE, N.C. - The Appalachian Athletic Conference (AAC) saw two of its own recognized as NAIA Women's Basketball All-Americans as Brooke Hammonds of Union and Gracee Dishman of Bryan made the list as honorable mentions.
The national office announced the All-American Team on Thursday.
This is the second year in a row Hammonds earned All-American honors, collecting first-team honors in 2019-20. The Pennington Gap, Va., native averaged 14.5 points and 11.1 rebounds per game to go along with 83 assists, 45 steals, and 28 blocks. Hammonds recorded 12 double-doubles on the year, tying her for the most in the AAC. For her career, Hammonds has 1,507 points and 1,092 rebounds.
Hammonds collected a number of awards this season, including AAC Player of the Year, All-AAC First Team, AAC All-Defensive Team, and the AAC Player of the Week three times. The senior helped the Bulldogs to a 15-6 record and a trip to the NAIA National Championship Tournament.
Dishman helped lead the Lady Lions to another historic season, one filled with unprecedented and unpredictable scenarios due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After doubts if there would even be games played this season, the team completed their third-straight undefeated conference campaign (14-0), received votes in the NAIA Coaches' Top 25 Poll all season long, earned their fourth Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Championship in five years, and punched their ticket to the NAIA National Championship Tournament where the team recorded the program's second Opening Round victory.
A freshman, Dishman quickly asserted herself as one of the best players in the league, as the guard was named to both the All-AAC First Team and All-Freshmen Team. Dishman finished the year as the team's leading scorer, averaging 14.3 points per game and totaling 301 points while starting in all 21 contests. She led the conference in field goal percentage at 54.7 percent and ranked 22nd in the NAIA. Her 87.3 percent from the free-throw line is ranked first on the team and 12th in the nation.
